Hello, fellow witches and wizards (and interested muggles)! I'm back with the third recipe in my Harry Potter Halloween series, and this one's a fun one. This week I'm really excited to share ideas for setting up a fantastic Harry Potter-inspired sweets table, starting with these fun and simple edible wizard wands. They are so simple and easy to make, which makes them perfect for making with the kids. My twelve year old and her best friend made them, start to finish, by themselves, and they turned out fantastic!

Wands play such an important role in the wizarding world, so I knew I needed to include them in my Harry Potter series in some way. I remember reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone for the first time, and how Harry's experience buying his wand felt like an initiation (both for Harry and for the reader) into the wizarding world.
Harry took the wand. He felt a sudden warmth in his fingers. He raised the wand above his head, brought it swishing down through the dusty air and a stream of red and gold sparks shot from the end like a firework, throwing dancing spots of light onto the walls.

Since I'm not Mr. Ollivander, and lack the skills to make actual magic wands, these edible wands will just have to do! What they lack in magical ability, they definitely make up for in deliciousness.

Making these edible wizard wands is definitely not rocket science, but I still think they're really fun! I've seen edible wands made out of licorice on Pinterest, but I wanted my wands to be able to stand up on their own instead of flopping over, so I decided to use pretzel rods as a base instead. (As a side note, I wasn't able to find pretzel rods at any of the grocery stores near me, but I did find them at Target. So if you're having a hard time finding them, give Target a try!) The bonus with using pretzel rods is that you get that delightful salty/sweet combo that I love so much.

To make the wands, we dipped the pretzels in light cocoa candy melts, waited for them to cool and harden, and then drizzled them with dark cocoa candy melts. So simple and easy, but so fun too! If you take your time and tap off all of the excess chocolate before you move the pretzel rods to the baking sheet to cool, they will be much neater and less wonky, and the finished product will look more like a wand and less like a puddle. Don't worry if the darker chocolate drizzle overlaps the edges, though; it will be easy to remove with a knife (or to just knock off with your fingers) after the wands are set.

These edible wands are a fun (and tasty addition) to any Harry Potter party, and so easy that the kids can help make them. Be sure to follow along all week as I share more Harry Potter inspired sweets!

Edible Wizard Wands

1 package light cocoa candy melts
1/2 package dark cocoa candy melts
1 bag pretzel rods

Line a baking sheet with parchment or a silicone liner. Melt the light cocoa candy melts according to the package directions in a microwave safe bowl. Dip a pretzel rod in the melted chocolate, and use a spoon to pour chocolate over the pretzel, leaving about 1 1/2 inches of pretzel uncovered. Tap the pretzel on the side of the bowl gently to remove the excess chocolate. Place the pretzel rod on the prepared baking sheet and repeat with remaining pretzel rods. Let cool and harden. Add the dark cocoa candy melts to a small microwave safe bowl and melt according to the package directions. Pour the melted chocolate into a piping bag or zipper bag, and cut a small piece off the corner of the bag. Drizzle the dark chocolate over the cooled pretzel rods. Cool completely, then break off the excess chocolate.
